Book Review: A Question of Intention

I don't like to give anyone "bad" reviews, but as a Reiki Master/Teacher for quite a number of years, I've known some students who have read a few of Steve Murray's books and then professed their extensive knowledge of Reiki to me. Because of what I was hearing, some of which I did not agree with, I then purchased one of his videos to see what level of instruction students were experiencing and found it troubling in a number of ways. What stikes me most is Murray's continued mass production of "Reiki instruction" in various media that screams to me "I'm trying to make a healthy profit from this very real and spritual process."
The second thing that troubles me is the lack of guidance students are receiving during their own evolution into energy channeling, and it would appear that Steve Murray isn't capable of providing that support and guidance to them with no followup system.
Overall, I think the reviewer P. Elfelt said it best for me in addressing and analyzing each of those "myths" Steve Murray supposedly discounted. In Elfelt's analysis, Elfelt clearly demonstrated a knowledgeable accounting of credible and ethical teaching methods. I agree with Elfelt that a student can in no way realize and appreciate what each level of Reiki represents to that person's physical, mental/emotional and spiritual evolution when a student is attuned in 2 or 3 levels in a weekend. CAN a student be attuned in all 3 levels in a weekend? Sure. Is it in that student's best interest to have it done that way--especially with no followup or support system after the attunements? Probably not.
There is a very large difference between knowledge and wisdom, and sometimes, it takes decades of personal experience to recognize that difference between the two. Steve Murray can provide some knowledge, as can any book or video, but unless that knowledge is absorbed in its proper context and then synthesized/utilized by the student in a supportive learning environment like a classroom setting, the "quick and convenient knowledge" imparted to that person may never become real wisdom because the time was not taken to first "experience it" with others, and then to eventually embody it.
I think what bothers me most here in this mass of Steve Murray "Reiki-related products" is not that he is "exposing secrets," which I think Diane Stein did a fine job of that long, long ago with her book "Essential Reiki," but the appearance that Murray is marketing this amazing and sacred practice in the manner that he is doing. He might be sparking additional interest in Reiki, and helping to mainstream the name and concept of energy-healing practices in general, but to market it like he is the "guru" now revealing ancient secrets and prohibitive practices is a bit too much to swallow for me.
