Book Review: A Slow Beginning, but Things Get Better - 3.5 stars

Collin Boyd isn't who he used to be, isn't who he thinks he is, which means he isn't Collin Boyd anymore and it's debatable as to whether he ever was. He's now Grant Borrows, and he's been Shifted. His consciousness now resides in a body that seems too good to be his, but with that sudden Shift comes dire consequences.
Collin--Grant--is not even given the time to adjust to his new...everything...before a maniacal killer is upon him. Using skills he didn't even know he had, Grant manages to escape, but this only takes him deeper into the mystery. He soon finds that he is not the only one who has been Shifted, and begins to learn just what the Shifting means. It all stretches back to a secret society called the Secretum, a seven thousand year old prophecy, and a group of some very unlikely heroes.
The grand plan of the ages is coming to fruition and it all centers around Grant Borrows. The game is in motion and it will not stop. It seems as if the whole world has conspired against Grant and his few friends as the evil that surrounds them seems so Relentless.
Relentless is Robin Parrish's debut novel, published by Bethany House in 2006. The first of the Dominion Trilogy, Relentless sets the pace--indicative in the title--early and Parrish flexes his sci-fi muscles well. In the beginning, the reader is just absolutely confused--but that's ok, because so is the main character. The whole background for the Dominion Trilogy develops alongside the plotting to Relentless, allowing the reader to learn as Borrows learns.
More than just an action-packed sci-fi tale, Parrish subtly--then not so subtly--weaves in his overarching allegory and theme. To me, this is when the book went from novel to Story. Novels entertain, but Stories mean something. This has to be what fellow author Ted Dekker was talking about when he said that Parrish's "stories are sure to shape fiction for years to come."
Under the action, Parrish subtly raises questions about some deep philosophical questions such as the mind/body dilemma and the psychology of nature and nurture while haunting the reader with some theological musings. In the action, Parrish is solid, delivering a few twists that stretch the limits of believability but overall drawing the reader in well.
I liked this book more with every page I read. Meaning, it's not going to take me long to tear through the pages of book two, Fearless.
