Book Review: Before Western hegemony

This book treats arcane subject matter that I happen to be fascinated by. Surprisingly, the book is also a really good read, and packages academic exactitude and scholarly research into a handy, clearly-structured format. It provides an insight into a world that is lost: the world of Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and other new-since-the-end-of-the-Cold-War nations, all the way to China). In fact, this book gives you a glimpse of what this part of the world was like _before_ there were nations. The most interesting thing the author says is that this was one of the most religiously syncretic places on earth: Buddhism, Islam, various Christian sects (Nestorianism and Augustine's original sect, Manichaeism), shamanism, plus the oldest surviving religion in the world, Zoroastrianism, alll jostled for space. The author also interestingly argues for not stamping these religions with one single meaning: there is not _the_ Christianity or the one true Islamic faith; there were diverse sects and, above all, these religions all changed practices and meanings over time. The Christianity of the 10th century, e.g., was not the same Christianity that we have today.
In this age of fundamentalism vs secularism, and in the post-Cold-War carve-up of the globe, it is fascinating and salutary to read about a time when matters were arranged quite differently. I really enjoyed this.
