Jane speaks from the heart and the head as she describes the challenges of her life which range from her three divorces to her three near-death experiences. The latter make her brush with bankruptcy pale in comparison.

Hopefully, none of us will ever have to face changes in our lives like those of Jane of her friends: the death of a child, sudden blindness, complete paralysis, the burning down of our house in our absence while facing career and marital crises at the same time.

No one coule pretend surviving such extreme situations as these is easy. But Jane suggests it is possibe. How? By having a positive attitude and a sense of humour. By facing problems, not running from them. By not wasting time and energy on things we can't control. By acceptance. By forgiveness.

These methods must work. Using them, Jane has fostered remarkable family connections which include not just children and step-children but also ex-step-children, parents, step-parents, ex-step-parents, ex-husbands, and even ex-wives of ex-husbands.

Being a mother, I particularly like Jane's message that parents can inspire their children to survive by showing they themselves survived against the odds. Jane's own mother was one such survivor of a Japanese concentration camp.

Jane's final chapter, "Find Guidance in the Spiritual", gives plenty of food for thought, even for the non-religious.

So should you buy a copy of this book? Yes. Better still, buy two. You will want to keep one yourself to reread every few months to keep yourself motivated. And you'll want to have one to lend to cherished friends who are facing remarkable changes in their lives and need to make choices about how to survive them and even turn crises into opportunities to blossom in our post 9/11 world.
