Book Reviews of Rent

Book Review: Duh
Summary: 5 Stars

There's nothing I can say about this that hasn't been said. I've had a burnt copy of this for a year or so and felt really guilty about it. I felt like there was something wrong with me- that this music had changed my life, and I hadn't paid a penny for it. So that's why I bought it. It also sounds a lot better on the actual discs, louder, etc...

Hopefully this show will continue to change the lives of others the way it has mine.

Book Review: My new favorite movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have wanted to see Rent on Broadway since it came out 10 years ago, but never got to. I was thrilled to have it made into a movie. I saw it in the theater twice in a couple days, & preordered the DVD. I waited anxiously for it to arrive.
This movie is so wonderful, & right away became my favorite movie of all time. It is life affirming. The overall themes are living life to the fullest in the face of poverty & impending death, friends forming a family that takes care of one another, & celebrating life. I cried through most of it.
The music is incredible, beautiful songs & amazing harmonies. I have listened to the cd so much since I got it 3 months ago, I may just wear it out!
I loved all the characters, thought they all did a great job. I especially like the story of Tracie Thoms, going from Rent Head fan to starring as Joanne in the movie. She has an incredible voice. Wilson Jermaine Heridia was unforgettable as Angel. I've liked Jesse L Martin on Law & Order, but seeing him as Collins made me totally nuts for him. That man can sing & be sexy as a gay man, even to a straight woman!
Buy this movie & the cd, you won't be disappointed.
La Vie Boheme!!!!!!!!!!
(I'm looking for baggage that goes with mine-Mimi)

Book Review: La Vie Boheme
Summary: 5 Stars

With the recent release of the movie version of "RENT," this book about the Broadway musical "RENT" should sell quickly. The book is a colorful collection of photographs, lyrics, and stories behind the musical. It is a printed version of the behind-the-scenes documentary featured on the "RENT" DVD Special Features section.

The story of "RENT" is about 8 struggling artists and friends in the Lower East Side of NYC during the 1990's. Tackling controversial issues of the AIDS epidemic and homosexuality, this rock musical has been referred to as the "Hair" of the 1990's generation.

Jonathan Larson, writer and composer of "RENT," unexpectedly died on the night of the final dress rehearsal. Fortunately for us, his message of "No day but today," lives on.

Book Review: Don't Rent...Own
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the perfect book, on an amazing musical. I found the history of the production, especially the background on Larson to be fascinating, I really could not put it down, and the pictures are well selected, this book really does this iconoclastic musical justice and that really is saying something..if you have any interest in great musicals and/or just love Rent, then you should own this book. I was really skeptical when I first went to see Rent..it had gotten so much hype and though I thought the soundtrack was incredible, I just for whatever reason put off seeing the show..but when I saw it I was blown away, it met the hype and then some, I really did not think the subject matter would hold up over time, but now I believe, like La Boheme, it is timeless. We all hope, like with Consumption, we will find a cure for A.I.D.S. and soon, but until that day, Rent will continue to keep the image of this insideous disease in our minds and hearts, along with the uplifting hope that maybe one day this disease will be irradicated, and that the Angel's of today will live and flourish.
