Book Review: A Rich Narrative, Slightly Flat Ending

This book began with great potential, but tuckered out a bit at the end. However, I have to say I liked it better than most Davinci Code type biblical revelation book because it takes place in the historical setting of post-WWII. So along with the mystery of the Gnostic Gospels, there is also an emotional conflict about the characters coming to terms with rebuilding their lives. As Gemma learns more about her archeologist father's work and his recent death, she also develops a deeper understanding of her emotional needs and her faith. Malarkey delivers some great history about Gnosticism and the early church, some I'd heard before and some that was new to me. She also offers interesting interpretations of these gospels and Christ's ministry, but I would have enjoyed the novel more if she had strayed a bit from the historical timeline and got a little creative with an original and revelatory conclusion. Otherwise, it was a good read, rich in detail (great imagery of Cairo) and engaging characters.
