Book Review: An example of proper research based writing!

I don't normally leave book reviews but this one is worth it. While such a book could have been another lacking-in-facts-secret-conspiracy paperback Mark Antonacci has produced a serious scholarly work - though highly readable. Having said that, I found it was a 'chapter a night' book rather than 'down in one go' piece.
The book is stuffed full of facts. The author takes the reader right through the research history of the shroud from the ground up, particularly, though not exclusively, in regards to the 1978 STURP investigations. Full and detailed descriptions of the tests are all covered and everything is fully referenced. Every possible theory ever offered for the image(s) on the shroud is taken fully `on the chin' and dealt with in detail. This is all with relevant illustrations particularly the VP-8 images which tell their own story.
Certainly Antonacci has his own view on the nature of the image on the shroud. But, unlike many who just pontificate, he has done serious research and he draws his conclusion the right and scholarly way by use of scientific data, considering ALL the alternative theories and gives sound reasons for credible rejection of them. The author does not run from sceptics but, on the contrary, takes on potential opponents to his theory on evidential grounds. The amount of raw information in the book is incredible and Antonacci is to be commended for both leaving no stone unturned but also enabling the reader to swallow the huge amount of data without feeling overloaded. It's a masterpiece of proper research based writing and not at all a 'religious nut job' or 'militant atheist' with an axe to grind. This is a well written, well reasoned work indeed.
The 1988 carbon dating issue is, again, taken 'on the chin' and he tells a remarkable and disturbing tale of one of the biggest scientific blunders in history. I don't want to 'give away the plot' but even a lay person knows you don't test one sample from one location in three labs. You send three samples from three different locations to three labs and you don't label the controls so the labs know which piece is the shroud! I have to say, Antonacci does not lack in terms of evidence or investigation anywhere that I can see including the 1988 carbon dating fiasco.
The conclusion is extra-ordinary, even more than I imagined. However, true to the scientific end, Antonacci signs off begging for more research already having established the further tests needed that would confirm the origin of the image on the shroud. I commend you read `The Resurrection of the shroud' if only to see how to make a case. Indeed, so good a book was this, and so extra-ordinary the story, my brother and my mother (around at the time I was reading the book) kept secretly stealing it to read themselves! My mother read it before I finished! We all concurred it was a superb piece of scientific writing based on solid evidence. Give it to your children to teach them how to argue at college. Seriously. Really a masterpiece.
