Book Review: A nice read with the exception of a few svinois and other misfortunes
Summary: 3 Stars
Any writer that pays homage to Iain M. Banks by christening a spaceship "Nostalgia for Infinity" gets an extra star. Not accidentally, the most enjoyable parts of the novel take place inside the spaceship. Some other facts I appreciated about Revelation Space:
1. Interesting Fermi Paradox solution.
2. Conscious attempt to abide by physics laws. So, no magical FTL drives.
3. Nice and inventive new concepts, even including a spaceship with a penthouse view.
On the other hand, nobody's perfect. Reynolds does not possess glowing writing craftsmanship, which means that an editor could cut off some of the irritating "svinoi" expletives a main character monotonously uses in about 100 years of action, not to mention some cliches like the following gem: "Sylveste thought of himself as a machine in which Calvin was about to become the ghost..." Come on now Mr Reynolds, this is how SF writers used to write at around the time the Asteroid arcade game was invented.
So, in a nutshell: The writer has a very creative imagination, comes up with fresh and new ideas, much like Cordwainer Smith once upon a time did, but without his literary skill. Overall, a nice read, 3 1/2 stars.
