Book Review: Underwhelming

Hyland's portrait of Richard Rodgers is a well-written but essentially dull biography. Rodgers, one of the theatre's greatest artists, deserves a more involving study than this, and readers should turn to Merle Secrest's "Somewhere For Me" if they want to discover the man as well as the music. Hyland seems reluctant to get to grips with the darker side of the Rodgers story, the alcholism and depression, which provide vital clues to understanding this complex man. Hyland is good on the working processes between Rodgers and his two great collaborators, Hart and Hammerstein, and there are some revealing details on the making of the shows and songs. However, much of this can already to found in other books, including Rodgers' own fine autobiography, "Musical Stages". Despite his uncontested reputation, Rodgers has not received much in the way of biographical examination, and Hyland must be applauded for undertaking this book, but ultimately one feels no closer to the man than before.
