Book Review: Writers of the Purple Prose
Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this book because it has a reputation of being one of the seminal western classics and also because (for reasons of my own) I wanted to see how it dealt with the Mormon/LDS characters. The book is enjoyable provided that one is prepared to make allowances for the fact that it was written so long ago. No publisher would look at it twice today. Much of the dialogue is particularly stilted and unrealistic. But the plot was good, some of the action scenes were well described, and the depiction of the wild Utah landscape was its strongest point of all. Think of this book as a period piece, a historical document in the history of the legendary wild west, and you might enjoy it. But if you want an action packed novel in the style we have become used to today, then this isn't for you.
