Book Review: An RPG with massive scope and bigger guns

Rifts is an excelent RPG system, though it might not appeal to all due to it's combat heavy system. It is great for a long campaign or just a break from more cerebral RPing. The game is set in a future version of Earth which has been obliterated by Nuclear war. The sudden loss of billions of people and the influx of their spiritual energy also caused Ley lines (which until then had lay dormant) which criss-cross the planet to erupt with power. Where the lines meet at a nexus point, tears in reality's fabric begun to open and open door ways to alien worlds and dimensions. Humanity now teeters on the brink of extinction as the world is preyed upon by evil daemons of phenominal power and dominated by despical tyrants with super power armies. Magicians and mega-psychics duel out in the wastes of civilisation and mutants and freaks migrate from city to city as human supremists hunt them down.
The world of Rifts is VAST!! The game is extensively supported by 'world books' which have been written for all manner of locations from Britain to South America. As well as Earth, the game also spills out into the infinite Megaverse with additional Source books detailing other dimensions for your players to explore.
My group have had hours of fun with Rifts and we return to it again and again because of its infinite possibilities and the sheer joy of pulling out weaponary that makes the death star look like a hand grenade. Some parts of the system (skills for one) seem a little dated with their percentiles and are a little clunky, but the rules on the whole are very simple and play proceeds quickly. I heartily recommend Rifts to everyone and anyone who fancies real excitment and is the mood for a slugfest with serious firepower. Excellent.
