Book Review: Victoria grows up and her world turned upside down!

I read and reviewed the first title in the Gardella Vampire Legacy, The Rest Falls Away, and was pulled into the world enough to want to buy this, the second book.
I'm glad I did! This is a brilliant continuation of the series and it doesn't fall into the trap of "plodding second book that doesn't really forward the story".
The beginning is a little slow with a lot of info I have to admit and is the reason I didn't give it the full five stars. We have some creaky exposition here and there, but all in all we are comfortanly reintroduced to the characters from the first book.
The main story centres around a vampire prince resurrecting an ancient obilisk that will grant him great power over the undead. The obilisk is a superb McGuffin that gets Victoria's corseted self over to Italy. Once away from Blighty, the story really begins... and I am sucked back into the worlds of the Venators with a vengeance.
Rises the Night is far superior to the first book. There are genuine moments of peril for our heroine; we really wonder if she's going to be all right. Victoria becomes a more rounded character, as do all of the main protagonists. The vampires are also becoming more three dimensional, one of my main problems with The Rest Falls Away, but they do still fall into the "wa ha ha, my pretty!" category of villain on several occasions.
As I said, this isn't simply another entry to continue the series. Major, world changing events take place: we are not allowed to get too comfortable. Gleason moves Victoria further away from her inspiration, Buffy, allowing this world to have a more individual character, but is still taking a leaf from Joss Whedon's book in character development. She is having fun thinking up ways to make Victoria miserable, a very Whedon-esque tactic.
You need to have read The Rest Falls Away to get the most of this book, which I seriously recommend. I will definitely be buying the third volume, The Bleeding Dusk, when it is released in February 2008.
