Book Reviews of River, Cross My Heart: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club)

Book Review: On the whole, an engaging novel.
Summary: 4 Stars

A quick read about racism and growing up. The book moves at a good pace throughout and then abruptly ends. I wanted more of a finish than what I got.

Book Review: Moving On
Summary: 5 Stars

A colorful combination of reality and fiction, `River Cross My Heart' has the ring of truth. The characters are familiar and easy to feel for, the situations recognizable from our own lives, and historic Georgetown is brought brilliantly to life in these pages.

Getting on with the daily routine of living is never easy after the passing of a loved one. After the tragic death of a family member, young Johnnie Mae must cope with her feelings of loss and guilt, all the while dealing with the ever burdensome trials involved in simply growing up. And she must do all this in 1920s Georgetown, where life is changing for the whole community as blacks and whites learn to seek out a new balance with each other.

Part historic novel, part contemporary fiction, even part action-adventure (I'll never forget Johnnie Mae sneaking into the whites-only pool) this novel is a grand old piece of Americana. Read it. Savor it. Love it. Read it again!

Book Review: Several times..
Summary: 3 Stars

I felt at home with this book. I wanted a piece of that lemon cake oh so very bad but this book didn't go anywhere and left me feeling like I was missing several pieces to the story. I wanted to hear more about Pearl and Johnnie Mae. I wanted to hear more about her mom and Johnnie Mae. I feel cheated but I am glad I read the story anyway!

Book Review: A Slow Simmer
Summary: 4 Stars

I'll admit that this book moved a little slow to me, but the writer got me caught up in the emotions, so I didn't mind. I often enjoy stories like this where the characters are fully developed and I can experience whatever emotions they are feeling. This one did it for me. Very moving.

Book Review: No, it isn't action packed
Summary: 3 Stars

The action is in the emotion and the imagery. The author does an outstanding of job of painting a picture with her words. You can picture Johnnie May's dad standing on the riverbank...in one spot...refusing to move until they find his little girl's body. You can picture and even feel the cool blue of the swimming pool on Volta Place. You can smell the herbs in Ella's home. You can move in and stay while you become a part of the book. I enjoyed it immensely.

I will recommend to my book-lover friends but I will tell my friends that only occasionally pick up a book to try something else...this probably won't satisfy.
