Book Reviews of River Secrets (Books of Bayern)

Book Review: A pleasant ending
Summary: 4 Stars

While I enjoyed the final book in the Goose Girl series, the language did not seem to flow as well as in the previous two books and at times did not fit with the setting. After reading the first two books, the ending was some-what predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Book Review: Another great fantasy by Shannon Hale
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought this was a great third book in the Goose Girl series. The main character this time is a male, which changes perspectives from the last two books. He discovers that eventhough he doesn't have a supernatural ability (like animal, wind, fire or water speaking) he too is valuable. He helps save the day and even gets the girl in the end. It's a fun, easy read with many likable (and some not so likable) characters.

Book Review: Another great story of Bayern from a talented (relatively new) author
Summary: 5 Stars

Shannon Hale came on the fantasy scene in a strong way with her book, The Goose Girl and its sequel, Enna Burning. Now, we return to the land of Bayern and the characters we met in those two books with River Secrets.

River Secrets focuses on Razo, a friend of Enna's and Isi's from the Bayern Forest. As Razo is not as tall or strong as the other members of Bayern's exclusive guard company, he is absolutely floored when he is chosen to accompany the Bayern ambassador on a peace mission to neighboring Tira. Tira and Bayern are trying to establish a fragile peace between themselves, which is hard in the face of the recent war (from Enna Burning) and the fact that someone is trying to incriminate the Bayern soldiers in a series of murders. It's up to Razo, with his sharp wit and ability to make friends with the Tirans, to find out who is committing the murders before the Tiran council votes to declare war on Bayern.

Hale's strength lies in great depth and characterization. Readers will be able to identify with Razo, an average guy who struggles with feelings of insecurity. It's also nice to revisit characters from previous books, such as Isi, Geric, Enna and Finn. But while their stories continue in River Secrets, it's not necessary to read the other books to understand this story. River Secrets is a leisurely read, with a strong plot buildup to the action at the end.

There was one passage in this book that I thought was a little strong for young readers, but other than that, I thought River Secrets was a wonderful book to read again and again.

Book Review: Even my 12 year old son loved this book.
Summary: 5 Stars

He has enjoyed the whole series beginning with "The Goose Girl", but this one was his favorite, probrably because a boy was the main character. Shannon Hale is one of my new favorite authors. And what a great deal we got all the books for through Amazon!

Book Review: Great!
Summary: 4 Stars

This book ties right in with The Goose Girl and Enna Burning. It's a great story about fighting for family, home and love. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved The Goose Girl and Enna Burning. I think this one was my favorite of the three.
