Reading Jeffrey Buckner Ford's biography of his Father and Mother is an eye opener, to say the least! Anyone who thinks the deep voiced crooner of such hits as 'Sixteen Tons' 'River of No Return' 'Shotgun Boogie' etc. had a charmed life is in for a big shock!
What starts out as a great love story, soon turns to tragedy, as the lovely Betty Ford turns to drink as a means of 'coping' with her husband's rapid rise to fame, and world stardom. One thing that does come through though, is the unconditional love Ernie Ford had for this woman, when lesser men probably would have packed up and left, he sticks by her through thick and thin.Happy times become further between as the years role by, two much loved sons are caught in the middle, watching helplessly, as their two parents sink deeper into alcoholism, and despair, eventually ruining Ernie's health, and career! A bit like Bing Crosby, caught between the 'perfect American Family' image, and the truth, it finally all falls apart, for all of them, including the boys!
Tennessee Ernie Ford's talent, and underlying faith live on through his recordings, and television programs, the real tragedy is that his life, and that of the woman he loved, never had the happy ending, they so much deserved!
This book is not light going, but a compelling story of two simple, wonderful human beings caught up in a world of fame neither of them wanted.
It's a brave move by Jeffrey Ford to write it, and at the end, you can't help but pray that he, and his brother Brion, can at least find that happy ending? They owe it to their Mum & Dad.
