Book Reviews of Room on the BroomBook Review: A story to tickle every child's fantasy Summary: 5 Stars
I was lent this book by an acquaintance and, having already read the Gruffalo and enjoyed that, I was looking forward to reading this one as well. I was not disappointed. In fact, the story appealed to me even more, if that's possible, than the Gruffalo. I liked the idea of a friendly witch who meets new friends on her journey to recover her hat, bow and wand and how, by working together, these friends overcome a greedy, red dragon. Personally, I think there is far too much emphasis in today's society on competition and having to be 'better' than others in order to be 'successful', and so any story that teaches children the value of cooperation is welcome. The story, whilst simple, has suspense and is wonderfully imaginative: the so-called 'monster', for example, is just a marvellous creation and brilliantly illustrated. And what child - or adult for that matter - can resist a bit of magic? It all results in a superb ending that had me smiling from ear to ear. As with the Gruffalo, the rhyming, repetitive verse makes the story very 'child friendly' and the wonderful rhythm captivates you from the word go and 'whooshes' you through the story (being a poet, myself, that is something I really do appreciate). As a child I would have loved to read this book and as an adult I loved reading it, because I've never grown out of that love of fantasy that makes a child's eyes shine (it's what inspires me today to write my own children's stories). I think this story is one that will tickle every child's fantasy. Highly recommended.
Book Review: An amazing little book Summary: 5 Stars
This is absolutely a fun book to read to your kids. They will be riveted from start to finish.
Book Review: Best Halloween Book Ever Summary: 5 Stars
My 2.5 year old daughter and I love this book! Although we skip the page with the dragon, the illustrations, rhyming and story make it fun!
My daughter loves the animals and loves to quote the book. Great reading for all ages.
Book Review: British version is better Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an ex-pat living in Scotland. This is my 19 month old boy's favorite book. We read it every night. It should not just be a Halloween book and it is a shame that some words have been changed for the American market. I've bought all my US friends a copy but made sure it was the British version and sent a little note explaining the vocab differences. It is good for kids to be exposed to language as well as the original charm of the story.
Book Review: Children's Lit Perfection! Summary: 5 Stars
Up until now, my favorite books to read my young child were Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo and Karma Wilson's Bear books, and while those books are still fantastic, Room on the Broom is superb. Typically, when I read a new book, my son shows little interest, as he likes the repetition of familiarity. However, on the first run, he was captivated by this book, and so was I! So much so, that I read it immediately once more. Axel Scheffler's artwork, as usual, is vibrant and gorgeous and Donaldson's gift for rhythm and rhyme is unparalleled in my opinion (and I own hundreds of children's books). This is a great little story about mutual appreciation, and at least for now, this is number one on my son's bookshelf. If I were a writer of children's books, this would be the model I would emulate. Marvelous.
