Book Reviews of Room on the Broom

Book Review: Such a wonderful, whimsical book!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson is such an awesome book. My son got it when he was four. We have read it so many times that I couldn't even count. Then a couple of months ago, our original copy was involved in a spill-related accident. There was no question that we would replace it. He would have missed it so much!!
The rhymes are inventive and funny, and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful. I do believe that any child would enjoy this book.

Book Review: This is the one I choose when I get to choose!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE reading this book to my kids.

Julia Donaldson works her magic again. In this book we meet a growing cast of instantly likable characters who become friends and end up sticking together to fight off a baddie.

The story is so beautifully written it feels like I'm singing when I read it, and my kids are not the only ones who, despite the fact we have read it countless times, still travel the full emotional road along which this story leads us.

Book Review: Top Favourite book at our pre-school and at home
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the big favourite books with the kids at our playcentre. It is gloriously good humoured, wonderfully illustrated, and very affectionate. It is about an (unamed witch) who is flying along, first she drops her hat, then her bow, then her wand. Each time an animal finds it for her and brings it back - then joins her on the broom.

Then, when her broom breaks in half a dragon tries to eat her, but she is saved by her animals, and they ride off on a 'truly magnificent broom'. Happy endings for everyone all round - well maybe except the dragon who goes hungry. Interestingly, the british version does not have 'witch withou fries' - as fries are the Americanisation - the British version has 'witch without chips'. I notice there are at least two variations on this cultural difference, and nice to see it - I think the chips one works best, (well it does for me anyway)

Lovely illustrations, bright, clear and colourful. Very likeable characters drawn. The real magic is in the words - it is a rhyming poem throughout and very very clever - nice rhythm and the children can anticipate it well. We use it to act out during our sessions too which the children really love. there is a great deal to do and think about to extend children's learning from this - as well as social lessons (cooperation, good nature, helping your friends).

Book Review: We LOVE this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

We love this book so much, I just can't keep myself from adding yet another review to the long list already here. We got this book two years ago when my son was in pre-school. Now he's in kindergarten and we still can't wait to get out all the Halloween decorations, just so we can read this book! We read this book every night between now and Halloween (along with the some other Halloween books) and we look forward to it every day. My son is almost 6 now, in kindergarten, and my daughter is 4 and they just adore this book. Since the characters are all so kind, and the pictures non-threatening, they have never been frightened by the dragon or the witch, or anything else in the book. When I was a kid, I would look each year for fun books to read themed around Halloween, and none ever really seemed to fit the bill. This one is a home run. You won't regret reading this book - it has become our Halloween tradition.

Book Review: We are on our third copy!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son loves this book so much, we wore out the first copy to the point that it was beyond me being able to tape the binding back together anymore. We bought him a second copy that has been "loved" as much as the first, and so we had to buy a third copy for my toddler so she had her own book that didn't have pages falling out while we were reading it. At one point, I had all the words in the book memorized, which came in handy while we awaited the arrival of our replacement book. At first glance, it may seem that this is a Halloween book. Let me assure you, you will enjoy reading this book all year long (I believe that my son asked to have this read to him every night for about 6 months) and the verse never gets tiresome. The story teaches children about compassion and the need to help others, despite the fact that you may not really be in the best position to help at the time it is needed most. Random acts of kindness by the witch thoughout the book are rewarded at the end of it when her friends save her from a fire-breathing dragon, and in return, she builds an even better broom to house her friends as a way of saying thank you. It teaches kids how important it is to be nice to everybody, and to be ready to lend a helping hand, because you never know when you might need a little help yourself.
