Royal Road To Fotheringay tells of young Mary's childhood and early adolesence. She grew up as the king's darling and she fell in love with the Dauphin, who she later married. Everything was going well, until she was once again forced to flee.

She went back to Scotland, a land she found very dour and grim. A land where it was considered a sin to be happy and dance and where her clothes and her behaviour was frowned upon.

Back in Scotland she married the weak Darnley, mismatch from the start, but after being raped by the a villain called Bothwell, she somehow ended up falling passionately in love with this man and this shaped the rest of her life.

I have read all of Jean Plaidy's books and I particularly like the beautiful Mary Queen of Scots series. If you like this book, you should also read "The Captive Queen Of Scots" which is the concluding book in this series.
