Book Reviews of RunBook Review: A Classic Example of Literary Fiction Summary: 4 Stars
I first read Ann Patchett in "Truth and Beauty," her non-fiction work about her friend Lucy Grealy. When wandering through the library and saw her name on "Run," I had to read it. I remembered Patchett's clear, beautiful prose and felt her fiction would be a worthwhile experience.
I was not disappointed. The writing is as good as I expected, with sentences that read like a cool glass of water. Patchett brings us into the world of Doyle, Sullivan, Tip, Teddy, and Kenya slowly, subtly, until you're surprized to learn how involved you are in their lives, how much you want it to all work out ok.
"Run" is an excellent story touching on interesting social issues. Thought provoking in a casual, almost sneaky way I found this to be very enjoyable. If you enjoy good fiction, you won't be disappointed in this novel.
Book Review: All in 24 hours Summary: 5 Stars
Since I loved Bel Canto I thought I'd give this Ann Patchett novel a try too. I'm glad I did. The story takes place over a 24 hr period and it didn't take me much longer to read it since I was hooked right away and couldn't put down.
Book Review: Ann Patchett can do better than this! Summary: 3 Stars
I really enjoyed Patron Saint of Liars and Bel Canto. This book was interesting and I liked the potential of the characters. I found Uncle Sullivan tedious at times and Tip too when he'd go on and on about fishes - but there are people like that - I just don't want to read a detailed account of his obsession.
I still enjoyed the book. I liked Kenya, Teddy, and Tennessee. While some coincidence is fine, this book seemed ridiculously full of them. The book was fairly fast-paced and I wouldn't rave about it but it was still worth the time.
Book Review: Ann Patchett's RUN Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to read Ann Patchett's book "Run" after reading her earlier book "Bel Canto" several years ago. This book has been out for several years, so my review is not timely! Since reading this book on my recent vacation, I've given my copy away and ordered additional copies for friends.
"Run" is filled with complexities, focusing on family, religion, politics, and relationships in general. It makes you think about how a moment--even one circumstance or event--can change the course of your life. It makes you think about what molds us--the age-old question of whether heredity or environment has the greatest influence on our lives and what part experience plays in who we become.
At its heart, "Run" is a story about love and how it transforms people--when it's important to reach out to someone and when it's important to let go--and all the consequences of the important choices we make.
Ann Patchett does her research, so you also learn some interesting facts in her books, in addition to loving the story and caring about her characters. She is a great writer and story teller!
Book Review: Beautifully written Summary: 5 Stars
This book was a home run. It had everything in it that makes me want to keep reading: Beautiful writing, emotional complexity, intersecting lives, culturally relevant issues expounding, and complete and total engagement. Patchett is definitely a cerebral writer and for me, that was the appeal. The second half of the book I finished in one sitting and like the Miami Herald proffered, I was in tears by the last few chapters, especially when the narrative focused on Kenya. I love the touch of magical realism in the book, but more so, Patchett's writing demonstrates she's an expert in the craft of storytelling. She captures the emotional depth, range, and affectual understanding needed to make these stories successfully told. In doing so she demonstrates the complexity of people's lives intersecting. I loved it and I can't wait to read more of her work. This will be a book I will continue to revisit and think about.
