Book Reviews of Run

Book Review: Breezy read, but not overly special
Summary: 3 Stars

Good, breezy read..lots of reviews say it "deals with issues of race"...I think the elements of this book that are praised as "social commentary" are pretty superficial.

It's a nice, if slightly unbelievable story. I was really gripped by the first chapter (the pieces about Bernadette and the statue were so beautiful, it could have stood alone as a short story). Then the book seemed, to me, to digress into a "What If" real-life drama / spin-off of the Kennedys or something...like a Law & Order "ripped from the headlines"...fell flat between that and the kind of unbelievable twists and turns.

I like the way Ann Patchett writes, however, so I'll give "Bel Canto" a try

Book Review: Can I give it 3 1/2 stars?
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been very torn about how to review this book. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it because she is truly an incredible writer, but I'm not sure the overall effect added up to the sum of the parts. I liked the story and the characterizations were beautiful. I also appreciated the hopeful nature of the tale. The book is broken up into chapters that tell the story from different perspectives. On one level this format works and on another level it doesn't. Some of the chapters/perspectives were some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen written (the uncle's perspective on God as an expample) and some of the perspectives were plodding and almost distracting from moving the story forward. So in the end, I guess the synergy required to make the whole more than the sum of the parts, just wasn't there...

Book Review: Caught Up
Summary: 5 Stars

Mesmerizing, completely caught up in the lives of ALL the personalties in the story. A page turner to be sure and one I hated to end.

Book Review: Connections and ties
Summary: 4 Stars

I somehow had missed the publication of this book, but since I have never disliked an Ann Patchett novel, (which I can't say about every author I read) I decided to pick it up and give it a try. Found this to still be true and found Run to be a very satisfying novel. Patchett has such a good way about her. Once again, she drew me in and kept me there, for the bleak and cold 24 hours in the life of the Doyle family. The descriptions and inner workings were as good as Bel Canto, but the pace was a bit more brisk. We are all connected in ways we can never know. And we all have secrets. Characters were well depicted and continue to live in my mind well after I closed the book.

Book Review: DISAPPOINTED
Summary: 1 Stars

THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME BY A 96 YEAR OLD LADY TO READ. SHE LOVED IT. I HAD JUST FINISHED THE, BOOK THIEF, AND HAD BEEN TRANSPORTED TO ANOTHER TIME OF COURAGE AND BRAVERY DURING WW11 IN GERMANY. THIS BOOK, RUN, WAS NOT IN THE SAME CLASS. I FELT THAT I HAD READ SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IN THE BOOK THIEF. NOT SO MUCH HERE. I HAS HOPES FOR RUN BUT IT NEVER GRABBED ME. I DID NOT FEEL ANY LOVE FOR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. IT WAS A BOOK I HAD DIFFICULTY FINISHING. WHEN I KEEP LOOKING TO SEE HOW MANY PAGES OF PUNISHMENT I HAVE TO ENDURE BEFORE I FINISH, I KNOW I AM NOT HAVING A GOOD EXPERIENCE.
