Book Reviews of Run

Book Review: Good writing with a so-so tale.
Summary: 3 Stars

This was the first Patchett novel I read. And, she certainly does know how to craft her words. But, one would think that since the story is constrained to happenings in one 24-hour period that there would be more action. Instead, the constraint actually worked against her.

In order to communicate who the characters are and their motives, Patchett is forced to make them dig up old memories, they either relive in their heads or talk about. So, mostly during the day characters eat, sleep, talk and visit the hospital -and it just gets a little tedious at times. Ultimately, this made it a so-so story for me, despite a couple of occassional surprises and her fine writing.

Having now read the other reviews I'm going to try one of her other books which so many claim are better. I'd love to see her great writing combined with a better executed story.

BOTTOM LINE: A generally enjoyable read because of her fine writing - but the story isn't executed as well as it could be and becomes tedious at points. Probably better to go for a different one of her novels if you're a first time Patchett reader.

Book Review: Great Characters, Weak Plot
Summary: 3 Stars

"Run" takes place mostly in one day. During that time, the biological mother of two African American men, who were adopted by a former Caucasian mayor of Boston, pushes one of her sons away from an oncoming SUV saving his life, and jeopardizing her own life and her eleven year old daughter's as well. These people had never met, but had been observed by the mother and daughter for the daughter's entire life. Needless to say, when the boys and their father find out who their savior was, it was a life altering experience. But there were too many coincidences to give this story credence.
I don't want to spoil the unfolding of the story for anyone who will read this book, so I can't go into all the contrivances.
Nevertheless, the characters are well defined and interesting.

Book Review: Great book group novel
Summary: 5 Stars

This one is very good for book groups. Ann Patchett can always be depended upon to write an entertaining novel that you can sink your teeth into.

Book Review: Great character development
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the story of two families who first come together during an accident in which a woman intentionally throws herself in front of a car to save the life of a "stranger." It shows the power and commitment of parental love, whether by birth or adoption. Great character development.

Book Review: Great quick read
Summary: 5 Stars

This was a selection from my book club and I thought it was a great book. Well written with a lot of details and everything came together at the end. I would recommend this book for any book club.
