Book Review: A Promising Start To An Original Series

Runaways is one of the most original comic books that I've ever heard of. Runaways tells the story of six kids (runaways no less) who have just discovered that their parents are part of some league of supervillains known as The Pride. One of the things that makes the whole situation so clever is that these people live in the Marvel universe, meaning that the X-Men, Spider-man, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four are real to them. Alex, Nico, Gert, Chase, Karolina, and Molly all come from a world inhabited by heroes and villains, yet none of them ever thought that they'd experience that world first-hand.
Each set of parents brings something different to the table; two of them are mutants, two are time travellers, two are inventors, two are aliens, two are strategists, and two are mystics. While most of the traits are passed on to their children, such as Alex's strategic skills, an anomoly exists in Chase. While his parents are brilliant engineers, he is an average student with athletic prowress (yes, it sounds like a cliche, as does each character at first, but all six runaways are fleshed out very well). Even though he won't be making any machines any time soon, he is adept at using his parents' creations.
Anyway, upon witnessing the sacrifice of a young girl, the six kids try to make sense of what is going on. At each of their houses, they discover things that allow them to access their innate powers (Karolina and Molly) or external effects to aid them (Nico, Chase, and Gert).
These first six issues expertly set up the series. The runaways fight their parents for the first time, and despite getting away, it's hard to call what happened a win in their favor. If this collection is a good indicator of what's to come, I can't wait to see what happens next.
