Book Review: Great Book

This is the most useful judo book I have ever bought. Ironically, I almost didn't buy it. Much of the book deals with newaza and coming from a Brazilian Jui-Jitsu background, I didn't think there would be much the book could tell me. As it turned out, it is an excellent compliment to BJJ ground fighting, filling in the holes necessary to make BJJ more effective for Judo. For example, BJJ is of limited value attacking 'the Turtle' when you have time limits on the ground. Russian Judo provides excellent techniques breaking down this defense into arm bars and other submissions.
I also found its unorthodox approach to throws very useful. The book provides excellent advice about throws using the belt and alternative grips not typically in places heavily influenced by Japanese Judo. These techniques have been particularly useful for me in tournaments, both Judo and BJJ, because they offer unusual and unexpected approaches.
I highly recommend the book, both for Judo and for BJJ. As with all the books in this series, it provides great explanations and pictures, and I feel the unorthodox techniques offer something for pretty much anybody involved in gi grappling.
