Book Review: SS United States Fastest Ship in the World

I purchased this book as a gift for a collector of ocean liner memorabilia who has many books on ships and was thrilled to add it to his collection. It also has a number of photos never published before including comments written by the daughter of William Francis Gibbs. It was published in time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of this once magnificent ship that to this day still holds the transatlantic record of Blue Ribbon champion as the fastest ship with the capability to cross in only 3 days. The unique design of William Francis Gibbs was kept top secret for years. It is also the only ship I can think of where the name of the brilliant designer is well known and closely tied to the proud history of this ship. The book raises awareness to save the SS United States docked in Philadelphia for several years and the SS United States Conservancy that refuses to let it end up on a scrap heap as so many other ships have and most recently the once beautiful France - Norway sailed towards that sad final destination.
