Book Review: Demons, killers and witches, oh my!

In Covenant, John Everson presented one of the rarest of horror stories, the haunted cliff story. His new novel Sacrifice is a sequel to that earlier book, and though the cliff is no longer haunted, things are far from okay.
Since it's a sequel, it's best read after Covenant, but if you haven't read it, Everson provides enough exposition to clue you in on previous events. This story follows Ariana, a beautiful ex-nun who has decided to literally unleash Hell on Earth, with her as queen. This requires an extended ritual that will unleash the demonic Curburide: Ariana has to kill several men in different locations throughout the U.S., with a final sacrifice at that infamous, once-haunted cliff. Ariana will find that not all her victims are willing to go quietly, creating complications for her plans.
Meanwhile, Joe Kieran, the reluctant hero of Covenant, is also going across the country, albeit in the opposite direction of Ariana. Joe is bound to the demon Malachai, a nasty fellow who nonetheless is no fan of the Curburide. As a result, Joe will be reluctantly recruited to stop Ariana's plan. Along the way, he will get a companion: Alex, the teenaged witch, gifted with the ability to communicate with the dead and a few secrets of her own.
In a way, Sacrifice is a darker take on Christopher Moore's comic horror novel, Practical Demonkeeping, which also deals with a person bound to a malicious demon. The humor in Sacrifice is a bit sparser, but that doesn't keep it from being a good read. In fact, Sacrifice may be even better than Covenant. A bit routine in places, this will please most horror fans, especially those who've read Everson's earlier works.
