Book Review: Engaging account of growing up female in a muslim society
Summary: 4 Stars
This book gave me some insight into what it means to be a muslim woman, the positives as well as the negatives. From the first page Gelarah Asayesh pulled me inside her world, she felt like a new friend. She paints a picture of a warm home life in Iran, rich with the scents and colours of the Middle East. Her family's move to America to escape the privations and dangers of living in an unstable political system, comes as a rude shock at first and really gives a sense of how sterile and unwelcoming America appears to a new immigrant.
However the freedom and wealth of the West are hard to give up once experienced so Gelarah is torn between her expansive life as a journalist in America and her sense of loss at being apart from her extended family, and the traditions of her youth.
Gelarah is drawn to some aspects of the muslim faith and longs to be committed to something like her aunts and cousins. However she remains an observer and gives the reader an interesting vantage point on the muslim laws and customs.
