Book Review: Is Ian a Saint? Well, Maybe.
Summary: 4 Stars
This novel is quintessentially Anne Tyler.
Ian, a young man, impulsively says something cruel to his brother. As a result, his brother commits suicide. Ian spends the rest of his life trying to atone for his guilt over his brother's death. He gives up everything and becomes an ascetic in order to raise his brother's children. Deeply religious, he looks for a sign from God that he has been forgiven.
How he relates to others and how his loved ones perceive him is the core of this novel and, in a deeper sense, Tyler examines how Ian sees himself and his place in this world. A one point his teen-age niece says to Ian:
"You think I don't know what I'm up to, don't you," Daphne said.
"Pardon?"
"You think I'm some ninny who wants to do right but keeps goofing.
But what you don't see is, I goof on purpose. I'm not like you:
King Careful, Mr. Look-Both-Ways. Saint Maybe."
Ian's core is described perfectly in the above quote. He tries to predict his world and never do anything impulsively again. He hopes to control life by being ever so careful. Is he a saint. Well, maybe. Then again, perhaps he is just seeking redemption and hopes to find it by never doing anything impulsive again.
Anne Tyler has an uncanny ability to get into the heart and soul of her characters and you travel there with her. This is one of her best books.
