Book Review: Good for Teaching the Five Senses

I don't usually like rhyming books all that much, but this one is an exception. The rhythm and cadence are complex enough that if you've never listened to jazz, you might entirely miss the rhyme scheme. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing, but, if it's an issue for you, I recommend buying a Fully Celebrated Orchestra record since (a) that's clearly the music this book refers to, an (b) I bought one and like it a lot even though I've never really been into jazz per se (at least not the newer stuff - I like Charlie Parker fine and use a lot of "cartoon jazz" in music instruction). The real benefit this book has to offer, besides delicate and imaginative drawings, is a fun way to teach young children about the interplay among the five senses: taste, touch, hearing, sight, and smell are all addressed as part of a single event. The other thing I really loved about the book was how adored the main character, Samson, is. This is a lovely little book.
