Book Reviews of Sandworms of Dune

Book Review: Best Sci fi Book Ever Written
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been reading the Dune novels basically since they started coming out because it started with my father reading them and then I got in to reading them. Dune has been so much apart of my life that it has become my life. Although we don't have spice to expand our lives and consciousness I feel that we can learn from each of these books in that we need to learn how to manipulate our own bodies through training and we can become Mentats, or BeneGesserits. These books only show the possibilities of what we can achieve. The creativity that went behind the making of this series is pure genius and anyone who thinks otherwise should be eaten by a worm or their water should be taken.

Book Review: Beyond Awful.
Summary: 1 Stars

Utterly dreadful. It amazes me just how bad "Dune 7" has turned out.

How can I put this? Hunters and Sandworms of Dune can both be boiled down to mediocre action novels. This itself is amazing considering F. Herbert chose to skip over vast actions sequences and would simply tell us how the battle turned out. Why his son chose to include huge swatches of poorly written action (from the immature and silly author Kevin J. Anderson) is simply beyond this Dune fan.

Perhaps the worst crime in Dune 7 is that the new authors are tampering with F. Herbert's characters and their legacy. Sure, the also ill-conceived 6 prequels they hatched were equally bad but at least they didn't tamper with Dune 1-6 cannon too much.

However, the mixing of Dune 1-6's legendary characters with characters created in the prequels goes together about as well as pudding and gasoline. They simply should not be mixed and to do so destroys what could have been a decent conclusion to the Dune epic. Instead we get this filth.

Shame on you Brian Herbert. Kevin J. Anderson can be forgiven because all he turns out is idiotic sci-fi but you cannot. Dune 7, their 6 prequels (with many more on the way) ruin the legacy your father worked a life time to create.

If fans keep buying this trash (due to our love and adoration of the originals) then they will simply keep turing this junk out. Do not buy this novel, you would be better served to imagine the conclusion yourself.

Book Review: Boring book and disappointing ending. Nice jacket though.
Summary: 2 Stars

I've noticed that many of the reviewers of this book are fans of the original auther, and make comparisons between him, and the current authors of this series- his son and Kevin Anderson. Whenever such comparisons are made, there are always disgruntled readers because, unless you copy the exact style of the original author, it is going to be different.

I am not a hard core fan of the original series, but I'm afraid I too have to give a thumbs down for this, the final installment of the Dune saga.

Why?

Because despite a huge galaxy and a cast of hundreds to write about, it becomes very bland, predictable and in the end, the characters act very inconsistently. I found that the final 50 pages or so were more like the ending of a Simon R Green book (Deathstalker series, Nightside series) than Dune. The characters make uncharacteristic decisions, actions and reactions are not logical, and it ends with a whimper.

I dont usually write very much about the plot per se because I believe that although most readers like to have an idea about what the book is about, they dont want to know everything, and there are plenty of reviews which spell it all out for you, should you want to "go to the end of the book", so to speak.

My advise would be to borrow the book, but dont buy it. I will be putting my copy up on ebay and Yahoo Auctions.

Book Review: Bound disappointment
Summary: 1 Stars

After reading this book, I have purposely avoided writing a review for several weeks in order to allow everything to digest. As you may have gathered from other reviews, this book is full of repetitions, loose plot lines, and other aspects that are not consistent with the previous Dune books. What I have determined is that this book was written on a 12 year old's level with little to no effort spent attempting to make this story agree with the original Dune novels. Character development was abysmal, plot flow was jagged, the reader is constantly reminded what occurred in the previous books, and continuity really does not exists between this story and what was set up by Frank Herbert. I could list examples of how this story does not fit and how it does not do justice to the Dune universe, but I will let it suffice to say that I have read amateur Sci-Fi online that is better written.

My recommendations:
- Do not buy this book if you are a classic Dune fan looking for closure from Chapterhouse.
- Buy this book if you have the reading comprehension of a 12 year old. Otherwise you may find it lacking.
- Kevin and Brian, please stop writing Dune novels.

Book Review: Closure to a Legend
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the Dune series before I knew Frank was dead and after Chapterhouse, what did I find out? Frank was dead, I was crushed. For more then a decade, wondering what had happened haunted my spare moments (well some of my spare moments anyway), there was just an empty gulf. What happened to Duncan and the No Ship?

Now those questions and many others that I didn't even think about have been laid to rest. I've read some of the comments about Kevin and Brian blaspheming Frank's work and I'm sorry but I thought the book was great. The style is different but no one can write quite like Frank.

I thought the character build up of troubled Dr. Yueh was masterfully done, he was a minor character in the original Dune. Leto was a surprise till the very end and who would end up being the one? Plot twist within plot twists, they weaved a maze and when strung tight, it made a beautiful pattern.

I'm glad someone had the guts to take up the story and the talent to pull the scattered plot together and tie it in a neat bow. Thank you.
