Book Review: "...just a know-how of a different sort."

As this story about a family-of-seven-with-a-secret begins, Mississippi "Mibs" Beaumont is looking forward to her only-two-days-away 13th birthday. It's around the time of teenhood that a savvy starts. The family has already seen the worst-case scenario; when the now 14-year-old Fish's nascent "know-how of a different sort" spawned what would normally be called a natural disaster. Mrs. Beaumont and Mibs' elder (17-year-old) brother's are known, while those of the younger children, seven-year-old Samson and three-year-old Gypsy, are yet years away. Only Mr. Beaumont is technically savvy free. But before Mibs gets to see the candled cake of her recent dreams, anticipation turns to anxiety with the news that her fab father has been badly injured in a car crash. Mibs' mother heads to the 90-miles-away hospital, while all but the eldest Beaumont boy hover at the house. The preacher's wife tries to make things right by Mibs by planning a birthday party at the church they attend "every Sunday," but amidst the chaos of the party (caused by an altercation involving the delivery of pink bibles), Mibs takes matters into her own hands. She and an assortment of others end up on an adventure leading them towards the fate of her father. The style of the story and especially the ending makes me think most of the Emerson quote, "Life is a journey, not a destination."
After picking up, starting to read, then stopping Savvy several months back, I gave it another go after my childrens' elementary school librarian promoted it to all the older (3rd through 5th) students at school's start, saying it was the best book she read last summer. We three first tried listening to it as a book on CD. I listened to the end, but the kids lost interest about a third of the way through. Afterwards, I read it, which I preferred to the CD version. I liked (the reader) Lily Blau's voice of Mibs and Lester, but was not a fan of her portrayal of the other characters. Highlights of the story were the unique plot and varied vocabulary. Lowlights were the anticlimactic ending (I expected more) and the repeated use of alliteration ("froufrou frippery," "antennae aslant," "razzmatazz radio") and silly rhyming words ("hobbledehoy boy," "squalling bawling," "bumping jumping"), which were fun at first but became totally tiresome. Savvy is a sweet, spiritual, coming-of-age story. Also good: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Giver by Lois Lowery, and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
