Book Reviews of Say GoodbyeBook Review: Graphic child abuse is not entertainment Summary: 2 Stars
I am a Lisa Gardner fan, and have liked all of her books, but I agree with the other reviewers on this one. The scenes of violent, graphic, sexual child abuse were too disturbing to make this a worthwhile read. There is no doubt that it was suspenseful and well written, but it was not entertaining, and the child rape and murder scenes were so brutal that they were seared into my brain. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Book Review: Great book! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a big fan of Lisa Gardner and have read all of her books. I really enjoyed this one, especially the way it tied in with her last book (nice twist!). Can't wait to read her next release!
Book Review: I agree with other reviewers, Gardner went too far Summary: 4 Stars
Lisa Gardner's SAY GOODBYE stands out among all the novels I've read as having the most haunting, hard to read sections I've ever seen. I've read a lot of mystery/thriller/crime novels involving serial killers. They are a lot of fun, and offer some sort of escape from reality as we read about an evil killer eventually getting caught by the hero of the novel. In Gardner's novel, the hero is interesting, but nothing groundbreaking. She is Kimberly Quincy, a 5-month pregnant FBI agent who begins working with a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent that believes a serial killer is killing prostitutes. That is standard plot stuff. No problem there.
As with most good serial killer novels, Gardner also writes from the bad guy's point of view. Except in this book, there are a few points of view from the bad guys (that all make sense in the end), and one is from a little boy, about seven, that is kidnapped from his peaceful home by the Burgerman. The scenes of violence and torture and sexual abuse the little boy is forced to endure was hard to read, especially since I have a boy that age as well. And, I just read a few other reviews and see I'm not alone in this opinion. The VERY sad thing is, Gardner is probably 100% right in her portrayal of abuse and its victims.
I kept reading though, because Gardner had me hooked. I wanted the bad guy to be stopped, and I wanted the victimized children to be okay. You'll have to read to find out what happens. But I believe Gardner does a great job of scaring the reader into understanding that evil exists and we must do everything we can to keep our children away from it. You can never go too far in protecting your children.
I've already started another Gardner novel and plan on reading more. She's a good author and writes characters with depth and creates plots with plenty of twists and turns. She is quite comparable to Karin Slaughter, except her characters are actually allowed to be happy.
Book Review: I couldn't put this book down Summary: 4 Stars
I should have gone to sleep earlier last night, but I couldn't put this book down. The first book I read by this author was her newest - still in hardcover. I went on to get her paperbacks because I enjoyed new hardcover so much. I thought SAY GOODBYE was a very different read than the new book, and it took me awhile to get into it. And, I guess because I read it so late into the night, I got mixed up about who was doing the thinking in the front of some of the chapters. I'm not sure what the background of the murderer is yet. So I guess I missed something. For that reason, I'm kinda left confused and wanting to understand better... so I've been going through the book today trying to piece it together better.
I'll probably end up moving on to one of her older paperbacks, though.
Anyway, for those of you who think it's too graphic, DO YOU EVER WATCH THE NEWS????
Book Review: Intense Summary: 4 Stars
I believe this is one of the most intense books and one of considerable truth I have read in a long time. I know it is fiction, but there is MUCH truth and you can actually feel the fear of the children. It would be a good book for ANY parent to read in the day in which we live. I love Lisa Gardner's work, but this was exceptional.
