Book Review: Give Molnar the Business!

Alex Molnar is America's foremost writer on commercialism in education and this provides a broad introduction to the themes of schoolhouse commercialism. It rails against the corporate war on schools and the exploitation of children and two chapter titles, Every Child a Consumer and Eat, Drink and be Diabetic: Using Schools to Promote Illness, illustrate the polemical tone of the book. It is, however, rigorously referenced and researched.The work is highly readable and, for those unfamiliar with the terms of the anti-commercialism movement, it provides an accessible overview of the field. For those familiar with Molnar's earlier 1996 work Giving Kids the Business there is little new here other than more recent examples of corporate marketing excess.
What is equally frightening in Molnar's work is that the intensity of the strenuous efforts of coporate America to infiltrate schools seems matched by the lethargy of the response of teachers and educational adminstrators. What are these folks doing? Worse, you can see the US experience creeping up on UK schools.
Molnar's books should be compulsory reading for all educators but for those familiar with his work, they may be disappointed that there is little new here.
