Book Review: A Simple Story About A Complicated Artist

Rare is the biography that examines in depth the work of an artist which exemplifies who they are. Author David Michaelis does this brilliantly in his work, Schulz and Peanuts. The author examines the life of Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts. Mr. Michaelis takes the reader through the growth of Mr. Schulz as both an artist and as a person. From his family upbringing to his experience as a soldier during World War 2, Mr. Michaelis uses these events to show how these experiences formatively shape Mr. Schulz's self image, which would later show up in his cartoon work. The events leave a mark where Mr. Schulz tries to balance his own negative self image with the image his admirers would later have of him as he built his media empire. This reflection of his own image could be seen in the development of his Peanuts characters, particularly Charlie Brown and Snoopy. The most interesting section of the book comes when Schulz moves west to California and begins the journey of success that few would predict for him in cartooning. Mr. Michaelis paints Mr. Schulz as a tortured artist who yearns to have both the respect of his peers as well as the monetary rewards which come with success, which he reaped in spades! Mr. Michaelis does a masterful job of taking readers through Mr. Schulz life from beginning to end, with many surprises along the way in simple prose without flourish or gushing fanfare. The book would not be complete without strips from Peanuts, which are included and wonderfully help tell the story of Mr. Schulz as an artist. You will not be disappointed from reading this book. This is a worthy addition for the library of readers who enjoy a well written biography.
