Book Review: The essential Science book for every teacher and student.

I found this book in America where it has been a number 1 bestseller, and it's easy to see why. The book is packed full of pedagogic science activities covering all areas of science including matter and energy, the human body, the environment, rocks, plants, animals, insects, weather, stars and planets and technology. These are sub- divided into the amount of time required for each activity, ranging from 'Quickies' and 'Make time', to 'One Leads to Another'. Although it is not written with the National Curriculum in mind, all of these activities can be adapted to complement your term planning and cover every area (and Key Stage) in the science curriculum. It is written in an easy- to- understand way, that even the most science- phobic teacher will enjoy reading.
The book can also be used as a reference guide as it tells you everything that you have ever wanted to know about the different science topics, and is packed with anecdotes, diagrams, charts, and background information. If you are after information about a particular topic, you can either use the comprehensive table at the front of 'Science is...' which will suggest suitable page numbers, or use the picture at the bottom of each page to tell you which subject area you are looking at.
Towards the back of the book is a brilliant 'Other Resources' section which is separated according to subject area, as well as including several resources (in a variety of formats) which go into greater detail about the theory of teaching Science.
To buy this book in any British bookshop, you will have to have it imported, which means that it can take as long as 6 weeks to come in, and you will also have to pay nearly double the price that Amazon is charging! Take my advice, and buy 'Science is...' now. It is indispensible for every teacher and student who wants to know more about Science.
