If you've ever gone to galleries and wondered, "Why is dipping yourself in Vaseline considered art?" read this book! Jerry Saltz, art critic for the Village Voice, writes about art in a personal, non-jargony, non-academic way that's totally refreshing. His opinionated essays help you understand why some contemporary artists stand out from the crowd of conventional copycats. I also love his review of the Matisse/Picasso show at MoMA, with his Beatles analogy that, among fans, Matisse is Paul and Picasso is John.
The book contains essays from several years of his Voice reviews. Each is a pithy 900-1300 words, so the book is easy to pick up and read anywhere, anytime. Before long, you feel like an art world insider.
