'And if I just turn that around for you, you can see that it's seven, no, eight centimetres long. Lovely...' Anyone familiar with television shopping is familiar with the cringeworthy farce it entails: lightweight presenters selling second rate merchandise to lonely individuals unready to take the plunge and dial a chatline, through spurious, rambling and inane commentary. Burroughs is clearly more familiar than most, and with his first novel tries nothing more ambitious than conjecturing the private lives of those whose smiling faces and perfect cuticles front the shows. We therefore meet the over the top shopaholic presenter, the over the top superficial presenter, and other such OTT performers as the new girl, sacked guy, over-zealous viewer and Chief Exec. Unsurprising though it is, Sellevision is a funny and well-written slice-of-life novel which - intentionally, surely - ends up as insubstantial as those whose lives it portrays. The lack of a sympathetic character is not an issue as the idea is to dislike everyone by varying degrees...
