Book Review: An Almost Terrific Occult Potboiler

Mosse has done her research on the La Belle Epoche - she gets the atmosphere , the clothes, the manners, culture and the nuances very nicely. She creates a very compelling read. It's an exciting, interesting story with characters you really care about and a genuinely creepy villain (at least in the 19th century). The story is compelling, paced well, and does a good job of shifting back and forth between the modern day and the end of the 19th century. The South of France is a character in its own right,and the other places where the action takes place are extraordinarily vivid. Mosse creates a gripping tension that sustains the turning of pages almost to the end.
So WHY does she fail so miserably on one of the most crucial elements of her story - the Tarot cards? Research on Tarot is ridiculously easy to do these days. Although the reading done for the modern protagonist is very well done, the deck that supposedly drives a great deal of the action is out of sync with the Tarot that existed at that time. The imagery described, the history cited, even the end notes are riddled with errors for which there is no excuse. One other quibble - in the era she describes, many of the artists she refers to in the 19th century had verifiable connexions to the roiling occult/bohemian sub-culture of the day. Those missed opportunities, and getting the Tarot aspects of the story wrong distracted from what was an otherwise an exciting, engaging reading experience.
