Book Review: A Fantastic Beginning

How refreshing. An Epic Fantasy novel that doesn't resort to the clichéd Epic Journey.
John Brown's first novel, and the beginning novel of a trilogy, sets us in a world where the days of a person's life can be bought, sold, or harvested. Our main character, Talen, finds himself being hunted for this very purpose.
What you get in this novel is a a coming of age story not for an individual, but for an entire people. There were enough ideas here to keep me interested through a slow beginning, and enough ideas to get me excited for the 2nd and 3rd novels.
Some problems you might encounter? A slow, misleading beginning--I anticipate that some people will mistakenly put the book down because it feels like a typical/traditional "been-there-done-that" fantasy. Stick with it. It picks up and becomes a terrifically dark and epic fantasy. Also, I had a hard time visualizing the ages of the main PoVs--especially the younger characters. Lastly, there is a bit of a learning curve here. Nothing like Erikson or Bakker, but I suggest reading the short glossary Brown included at the back of the novel before starting.
If you like the novels by Brandon Sanderson and Dave Farland, you will really enjoy SERVANT OF A DARK GOD.
