An autarchic, now seasoned (36 works) author's bizarrely entitled treatise has an emblazoned cover suggesting there's enlightenment vis-a-vis psychedelics as DMT, meditation, religion & dreams. Linking the book's contents with Einstein (E=mc^2) & others seems unfair, to wit: "In a 1929 interview, Einstein sets the tone for Sex, Drugs, Einstein, and Elves: 'We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library whose walls are covered to the ceiling with books...'" I am totally confused (and this is still only his Introduction!).
So, what's the book, SDE&E about? Unlike his highly readable "Computers & the Imagination" (1991), the present work 13-14 years later is degenerate & unreadable. He accedes (Chap. 7) difficulty finding publishers, he reviews their subtle inquests, flaunts his successes, & devotes 5 out of 10 chapters to ?heresay discussion of psychedelic drugs (DMT, mescaline, marijuana, opium, hoasca, etc.), their users ("Psychonauts") & the weird hallucinations experienced by these "Elves", & does mention a possibility of relatively higher concentrations of endogenous DMT being excreted by the pineal glands of Ezekail, Moses & Jesus (Yes, Doctor?).
The book is replete with repetition, recital of boyhood in Shrub Oak, NY & seemingly unrelated factoids. We are repeatedly reminded Marcel Proust was a great novelist for "A la recherche du temps perdu", & that Johnny Cash said "God gave us the darkness so we could see the stars." (My Mother told me God gave us the stars so we could see in the darkness!).
This book has been assembled with profound attention to Cliff Pickover's ramblings on drugs, plethora of factoids, his irresolute disclaimer of having had drug-induced psychedelic experiences, & a desire (if he had the money) to create the "Burning Man Technical Foundation."
