Book Reviews of Sex and the CityBook Review: Different from the show Summary: 5 Stars
If you liked the TV show you will love the book. But don't approach it looking for lost episodes of the show. This book was the inspiration for the show. If you appreciate this book for that you will see how groundbreaking the material is.
Book Review: Disapointing Summary: 1 Stars
Well I recently got hooked on the show and thought the book would be good. Its okay, kinda interesting to see where some of the stories for the show came from, but hard to read, poorly written and really hard to get into. Sorry Candace but I don't see how you made a living being a writer. I'm glad you don't write for the HBO show.
Book Review: Divas of Decadence!!!! Summary: 3 Stars
Most women I know can't really relate to the pretentiousness of the women found between the pages of this book, but boy do they find them interesting! These "characters" are not so much entertaining as they are enthralling. Due to the scattershot scenes of romantic quandaries, the book lacks the sense of cohesion that more traditional fiction gives. However, thanks to the success of the TV show, following the misadventures of Carrie and her girlfriends is a labor of love for the already loyal SEX AND THE CITIzens. This is what Jackie Collins or Danielle Steele would be writing if they were trying to be ultra hip! A sensational representation of today's current state of romantic dysfunction.
Book Review: Do blondes have more fun? Not according to this book. Summary: 2 Stars
This was an interesting book to read for the social moires of blonde women in Manhatten either married or trying to find the perfect rich husband. The first chapter is about a blonde single gal that is trying to land a rich husband, but really doesn't want to get married. It reminded me very much of the book A Certain Age. The second chapter was about a unhappily married woman. The third chapter was the very best and made reading the book worthwhile. It was facinating to me because I think it was a thinly veiled account of Carolyne Bessette Kennedy. I think it was, if it wasn't it surely reminded me of what her life may have been like. I think the author should do a whole book on chapter 3. The forth chapter was anticlimatic for me, but other people say they enjoyed it and that it is an veiled account of Candace Bushnell herself. All in all, if you are curious or interested in Carolyne Bessette Kennedy and the life she may have lead, I would recommend the book just for chapter 3 alone. It was great!!
Book Review: Don't Expect the Series, But Worth a Read Summary: 3 Stars
Being a huge fan of the TV series (like most people reading this, I'd imagine), and looking for something somewhat fluffy to read, I ordered this book and quickly finished it.The thing that struck me most was how *empty* the book felt. Whereas the characters on the TV series have some very close friends, the book doesn't really have that dimension. Sure, people go out with their fabulous acquaintances, but there never really seems to be a true connection among them. Lonliness is nearly a constant with the characters in this book. It left me feeling pretty sad, as well. Yes, it was comical, but it also had a fairly serious side. For fans of the series, this book is *not* told solely through the eyes of Carrie. The narrator is someone else, a "friend" of Carrie's and the other characters, who does indeed write a newspaper column. Most of the characters in the TV series are in the book by name only -- for example, Charlotte makes an appearance as a journalist with a completely different personality thank Charlotte in the series. And whereas I think most people genuinely like at least one person from the series, I think I finished this book disliking every single character. What did surprise me is that the first episode of the series is nearly verbatim from the book. What I liked about this book were the vivid scenes and the ability to create a feeling. I think Bushnell did a great job and making her audience feel what the characters feel. While it's not the series, it's certainly worth a read.
