Book Review: A more appropriate title: The Kama Sutra Rephrased, Plus 147 Pages of Fluff

My apologies to fans of this book, but I do not share your enthusiasm. I had high hopes for this read, and after page after page about "the purpose of visualizing colors" and "performing the protection ritual," I was relieved to get to chapter 19, which revisits the Kama Sutra positions. Having been an advocate of the Kama Sutra for some time, I can say that these are definitely worth trying, as they will add depth and variety to the physical side of anyone's love life. Aside from this chapter, the book contains little concrete advice on sex; the remaining useful information in the book could be condensed to perhaps ten pages.
Let me say that the author's writing style is not unattractive. Her sentences are ornate and flowery, and would be at home in a book of new-age poetry. Unfortunately, the words lack substance, and the image that they convey is rarely linked to any point or reference whatsoever. I would provide examples of this, but past efforts have resulted in my review being squashed due to quotation. Instead, I offer this simple excercise: Include the following words in a sentence. Flower, love, soul, flame, mirror, energy, divine. You now have an excellent approximation of the writing style used in this book.
If flamboyant imagery is what is missing in your love life, then this book is for you. If not, put on an Enya record and get the same effect, saving yourself hours of fruitless reading. If you don't own a copy of the Kama Sutra, give this book two stars. If you do, give this book a heave.
One final note: Many reviewers talk about using this book to treat a sexual dysfunction or as self-help therapy for past sexual traumas. Love the book or hate it, I can objectively say that both of these topics are clearly outside the scope of this book. People looking for help in either of these areas would do better to consult with a professional, or at the very least choose a text which addresses these issues specifically.
