Book Review: A rewarding clash in cultures

Joe Kubert IS Sgt. Rock. The man's written, drawn and/or edited him forover 30 years; but this is the first time a full length Graphic Novelabout Sgt Rock has been published.It's written by Brian Azzarello who's usually more associated with themean inner city streets than with the Black Forest circa 1943! But thesynthesis of these two styles and generations work well.
The story is involving and the Kubert's art is great - it's looser thanhis earlier work, more European and atmospheric, but none the worse forthat!
More criticism of this book is threefold:
1. It is obvious (despite what the introduction says) that this wasoriginally written as a series of 22 page comics and that the script forthe novel has just been created by sandwiching issues back to back!
2. The cost. I know that it's hardback, but I do think that it'soverpriced. NB: This isn't a criticism of the actually quality of thedesign of the book or the paperstock used, all of which are excellent,rather the actual cost to you and I the punters.
3. The Plot Hole. Unfortunately I can't talk about this without ruining alarge chunk of the book - suffice to say the jump to the last "act" leavesyou unsure of the fate of a major cast member; a sub-plot which is neverresolved nor explained!
In summary: a good solid book, lovely art, good characterisation; but waitfor the paperback version!
