Book Review: A strong wrap of speculation around a thin core of documented history

Companion book to the 2003 BBC television series "In Search of Shakespeare".
Fair representation of Shakespeare's life, seems to follow the same style of scholarship of the biography Nero I just finished: weave a strong wrap of speculation around a thin core of documented history. Given the temporal, cultural, geographic, and linguistic distance between Nero and the world I live in today, such speculative biography is not unexpected, not too far-fetched, even useful. However, since Shakespeare is not so far away on any of those dimensions, and seems like one of us in the world he helped create, such speculation seems uncomely.
I like this book best when it focuses on the material evidences of Shakespeare's life. Perhaps they are less than we would like for a fully-documented life. In that case, let him rest, don't make him up.
Wood was on more solid ground in his book In Search of the Dark Ages.
