Book Reviews of 'Shakespeare' by Another Name: The Life of Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, the Man Who Was Shakespeare

Book Review: Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Summary: 5 Stars

Supporters of the Stratford man recycle the same paucity of information over and over in a myriad of ways that now grows tiring with each new book release. But ultimately, it's a nearly empty desert they pull their claims from, despite the industry that has grown up around keeping W.S. as the author. But the devil, as they say, is in the details. Anderson spent a decade researching the 17th Earl of Oxford and the result is a smoothly written, easy-to-follow overlay of de Vere's life onto the plays and poems that makes them make sense as never before. He discusses the plays in a context deep in detail of the history, culture, politics, religion and, especially, family events of the time, and de Vere's friends and assistants are a literary who's who of the age. From this point of view, it simply becomes impossible to support the Stratford claim. And with this biography I think, finally, we have what we need to give the prize to de Vere versus other suggested writers such as Marlowe, Johnson, Bacon, etc.. Anderson adresses every Stratford claim, even the oft-repeated and innacurate one of plays being written after 1604 when de Vere died. He discusses "smoking guns" that are oh so close to being lightning strikes for de Vere. He is fair is saying when something is a fact and not. He does not force a marginal idea to be more than it is. But there is so much that the abudance of it all cannot be ignored. To bring it home, he gives us excruciating detail throughout of the central reason de Vere had to write under another name, though his authorship was obvious to those of the time - and there to be seen by us now if we will look with the 16th century eyes Anderson gives us. This book also stands out in that Anderson gives us pages and pages of notes at the end outlining in detail reasons and sources for most of his facts, ideas and conclusions. Without question, this is the most interesting read of this and many years in that it brings together virtually all of the ideas expressed in the past, modern research, and open-minded thinking that otherwise biased commentators could not tolerate. Those with closed eyes will not see. But for the rest of us, there is great persuasion here. This is an astonishing work of scholarship and THE read on this subject. Having said all that, of course if we change the name of the author on the books, it doesn't change the cornerstones of English inside. But wouldn't it be nice to finally give credit where credit is due? So, then, this is the perfect present for all your Shakespearean friends. They'll hate you forever!
