We follow his telling of his early life up to the King's Cavalla Academy where he will learn the art of mounted warfare. Here, we follow the development of his friendships, rivalries, trials and tribulations through his first year.

Blending a unique mix of fantasy, magic, Colonial Imperialism, Machiavellian politics and ecological issues, the Soldier's Son trilogy promises to be very different to Robin's previous stories, but her readable style remains.

Robin retains her ability to weave a believable and likeable lead character in addition to giving tantalising glimpses of the culture, history and religions of Nevare's world.

The story has the feel that it is well planned out for a first book in a trilogy, and while there is a degree of exposition as a result, and rather than be off-putting it draws the reader in, desperate to know more,

If you liked the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies, you won't be disappointed.
