I have been so overwhelmed by the brilliance of this book that it's hard to know where to start raving about it. For starters, it is hilarious: Shantaram's Indian guide who plays a major part in the story gives you a laugh every time he opens his mouth. Shantaram himself is the most amazing character you'll ever meet - the sheer breadth of his character and his experiences. He has done everything from armed robberies to tending the sick in the slums of India. Everything from a jailbreak to writing daily(?) reflections on his experiences. Here is a man who has really lived. And learned too. He is very honest about the inner world of a man on the run, a man with a conscience, a man who is lonely and grappling with shame. Loved it.
