Book Reviews of Shantaram: A NovelBook Review: A Great Escape (pun intended) Summary: 3 Stars
The interesting story is the author himself, of course (who wrote from his experience). Although some of the writing and philosophy (of the author via his characters) are annoying or even embarrassing, in all the story is very good, the reading goes quickly, and you are in fact transported to another culture -- with a view that you would probably never have. Roberts is talented without being a great writer. I'd still recommend.
Book Review: A Great Read Summary: 5 Stars
This book really captured me. Implausible in part, fantastic in part, absolutely grotty-real in part -- one has the sense that the writer poured a combo of his experiences/research/anecdotal stuff into a BIG pot and stirred well. It ends up in a mildly predictably fashion, but then... it's a novel! A very engaging book.
Book Review: A Gripping Page-turner. Summary: 4 Stars
A very well written novel. The author is fairly descriptive and paints a great picture of the characters various escapades.
Combined with the personal history and experience that the author brings to the table - this book is a must read for those who would love to read intriguing and exciting pseudo-biographical thrillers.
Book Review: A Hero's Journey Summary: 5 Stars
Shantaram is a wild, hero's journey epic. Part fact, part fiction told by Gregory David Roberts, an escaped convict who fled an Australian prison and found solace in India. Roberts writing is sometimes over dramatic and sappy but the book overall is an incredibly enjoyable read filled with culture, love, violence, and wonder.
Book Review: A Knock-Out of a Book Summary: 5 Stars
I had been meaning to read this but had put it off, finally, I was visiting an old friend and saw it on her bookshelf, apparently unread. She urged me to borrow it, I devoured it, and now, I'm going to have to buy my own copy, send it back to her, and beg her to read it for herself. It's just that kind of book.
This is the kind of book that spoils you for other books. The next several you read will seem weak and boring by comparison. Nearly impossible to put down once you start it, addictive and all-absorbing, it can break your heart and make you laugh on the same page. I never wanted to visit India before but now, I wish I could book my trip tomorrow. Simply amazing- you won't be disappointed by this masterpiece.
