I first read "She Was Nice to Mice" in second grade, and was instantly captivated. Ten years later, its humorous, meaningful lines still often run through my head. This is an enchanting and entirely unexpected look at Elizabeth I through the eyes of a little mouse who lived at Buckingham Palace during the queen's reign, and was privy to the great ruler's deepest secrets (including her baldness!). The story is historically accurate and lively enough to capture the attention of young readers, and the adorable drawings provide the perfect accompaniment to the engaging text. This book holds special appeal for all ages as an outwardly sweet, simple tale that holds deeper meaning just below the surface. I keep it on my shelf next to Winnie the Pooh and the Narnia chronicles as a book I will never outgrow.
