"A few years ago, on Manhattan's East side, not far from Bloomingdale's..." I know another reviewer has already quoted the beginning of this book, but having read the book over a hundred times since I was 13, I pretty much know it by heart. Sheila goes on to say that a man set up a business where he sold diet shakes, "delicious chocolate milkshakes having only seventy-seven calories. Only seventy-seven calories and such heaven! Well, I tell you, fat young girls came from near and far and lined up around the block at lunchtime. I was one of the ones who had two for lunch every day."
There was a buzz that maybe the shakes were too good to be true; maybe they didn't have so few calories, so they went to the Better Business Bureau--or wherever it is you go to complain about these things--and found that the shakes had over two hundred and seventy-five calories! DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE A MAN LIES ABOUT CALORIES? demands the indignant Sheila.
This sets the tone for the whole book; it's Sheila Levine's suicide note, because life in New York is hard if you're not Doris Day. She's been brought up to believe that if you're a good girl, you'll find success and the man of your dreams--but it just gets harder as you get older--"Sheila, find a husband while you're in college; it just gets harder after you get out." I've read this book over a hundred times, probably, and like Sheila I've never gotten married--although I feel pretty fortunate that I never did.
I have to get another copy of this book and read it again; it is a true gem, and fortunately it ends on an upbeat note.
