Ah yes, more of the neverending stream of art/entertainment detailing that oh so interesting tipic called "suburban angst" aka emo. While I do like some emo stories I generally can't find myself calling them masterpieces. I put 3 stars but I could easily put 2 or 2.5 stars at the most. My review is basically a "meh". Judging from the few other stories in Tomine's catalog I wonder if a review of "meh" is what he's shooting for.
The main character is basically a loser. Not the lovable loser like Charlie Brown (a character who fails every time but never gives up trying and puts more effort into winning with the next time after eaching passing loss). No, he's the pitiful loser; he's the guy who fails pathetically at things the average guy has no problem doing. His best friend is a chatterbox sem-butch lesbo, he works as a manager at a crappy cinema, he'd rather masturbate to porn than have sex with his g/f (who sometimes begs him for sex, by the way!), he constantly worries about his penis size, he starts sweating uncontrollably whenver a naked woman invites him to bed, and his blonde g/f decides to dump him and return to being a lesbian because she thinks he's too boring. After reading this I couldn't stop shaking my head. But when I read it a second time I kept cracking up LOUDLY. What a loser! I was laughing so loud the people are Barnes and Noble threatened to kick me out if I didn't quiet down.
But seriously, it's another emo story of the pitiful loser. The mellow, professional, and simple artwork is the most praiseworthy aspect of the book. I wish the storyline equalled the good artwork.
